Equine
Equine Apprentices on programme with Poultec are employed within the Equine Industry and could work on a number of different sites including livery yards, stud farms, riding schools and equine welfare charities. Poultec tutors visit each learner regularly at their place of work to provide on-site training, support and assessment. Each Learner is provided with access to an on-line portfolio and learning resources.
Whilst Apprenticeships are tailored specifically to the place of work, they will include:
- Best practice in the care and handling of horses.
- Preparing horses for public appearance.
- Tacking up and preparing horses for exercise.
- All day-to-day routines to ensure high standards of horse welfare.
- Workplace health and safety
There are a host of progression opportunities within the equine industry to enable you to fulfil your potential.

This Apprenticeship is ideal for those who are new to the industry and would like to start a career with working with horses. It is very practical and “hands on”, apprentices will work under supervision individually or as part of a diverse team. The Equine Groom is an integral part in the life of the horse, providing essential day-to-day care. Units are selected to ensure they fit around the candidate’s workplace i.e. riding, non-riding or coaching this ensures all training is fully relevant.
Tutors regularly visit the Apprentices place of work, providing teaching and assessment. Apprentices will also be invited to workshops where additional skills and knowledge are delivered in subjects that the Apprentice would not normally learn in their workplace.
Within this Apprenticeship Standard you will complete:
- Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horse Care
- Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths
To complete the Apprenticeship an End Point Assessment will be carried out by an independent assessor. Your tutor will ensure that you are ready for assessment.
Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard
This Apprenticeship is suited to those working in or towards a supervisory or management position. This qualification builds on the skills and knowledge that’s already been taught on the Intermediate Apprenticeship, as well as introducing team management. A Senior Equine Groom will coordinate the day to day care of the horses, lead and manage other members of staff and have the knowledge to implement effective systems to run the yard affectively. Units are selected to ensure they fit around the candidate’s workplace i.e. riding, non-riding or coaching this ensures all training is fully relevant.
