Sparks are flying at our Engineering Centre

We are very excited to announce that our dedicated Engineering Centre in Norwich has a brand-new team of three experienced engineering tutors, Jon, Andrew and Lloyd. Come September 2021, they will be teaching engineering study programmes, short courses and Apprenticeships from our three fully equipped workshops.

Our courses ranging from level 1 through to level 3, will provide a mix of theory and practical hands-on sessions, and are designed to gradually build up an individual’s skills as they progress through the levels of engineering. Learners will have the opportunity to learn a variety of engineering skills from machining and welding, to using hand and electric power tools. Our experienced tutors will guide and advise them on their vocational studies providing direction to help them achieve a recognised City & Guilds qualification in engineering.

With our engineering team having a total of 90 years’ experience, we are assured that each learner will get a solid grounding in engineering, by learning all the correct and safe ways to carry out given procedures whilst learning skills at their own pace in a positive encouraging environment.

Jon has been in the engineering industry for 18 years, starting as a welding Apprentice on the shipyards on the River Tyne. Jon predominantly worked within the oil and gas sector prior to becoming a tutor 8 years ago. ‘I am a qualified coded welder in MIG, MMA and TIG processes, underwater welding and I am also a CSWIP 3.1 weld inspector. I have been an educational instructor for 4 years and a commercial welding trainer for 4 years’ says Jon. With Jon’s expertise in welding, he is looking forward to delivering welding and fabrication units for both study programme learners along with Apprentices.

Andrew has been in the engineering industry for 30 years and over these years he has worked on a number of diverse projects. These include, the sound stage for 007 (James Bond) movies at Pinewood Studios, the 2012 Olympic Park and the stage house for Mary Poppins, The Musical, moving onto crane jibs for the offshore industry and nuclear power station fabrication. Andrew has been a tutor in welding, fabrication and engineering for 3 years and specialises in thick gage structural fabrication. He will be delivering a selection of units from City & Guilds 2850 in Engineering from turning, mechanical fitting to welding and fabrication. ‘As a tutor I am also there to advise and encourage the learners on potential future employment positions or Apprenticeships’ Andrew states.

Lloyd completed a 4 year Apprenticeship with Lucas Industries in 1984 and then went onto work for the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) until 1988. In August 1988 he became self-employed and started a mobile vehicle repair service and after 4 years opened up a garage, employing three members of staff. With 41 years within the engineering industry, Lloyd says ‘building a GBS Zero kit car is my favourite engineering task.’ Lloyd has a previous 9 years engineering tutor experience, and specialises in motor vehicle electrical, mechanical diagnostic repairs.
