Courses > Hair & Beauty

This level 1 qualification is designed to meet the needs of candidates who work in the hair and beauty sector. It allows candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the specific sector. This qualification also provides valuable accreditation of skills and/or knowledge; without requiring or proving occupation competence.

Description – This Apprenticeship is suitable for anyone either in full-time employment, or progressing from a Level 1 or those who are able to start a qualification at Level 2. NVQs are assessed within the workplace; for each unit, your assessor will observe and ask questions as you perform a task, or look at your portfolio work as formal evidence of your learning. Set assignments for each unit and mandatory tests are given as part of the Apprenticeship.

Content – The qualification includes the following framework:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and English
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Employee Rights & Responsibilities

  • Health & safety procedures
  • Advise and consultation with clients
  • Changing hair colour
  • Styling and finishing hair
  • Cutting hair using basic techniques

Duration – 12-18 months

Progression – Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering

Description – This Apprenticeship is suitable for anyone either in full-time employment, or progressing from a Level 1 or those who are able to start a qualification at Level 2. NVQs are assessed within the workplace; for each unit, your assessor will observe and ask questions as you perform a task, or look at your portfolio work as formal evidence of your learning. Set assignments for each unit and mandatory tests are given as part of the Apprenticeship.

Duration – 12-18 months

Progression – Intermediate Apprenticeship in Women’s Hairdressing

Description – The Diploma in Hairdressing is suitable for people who have taken a level 1 or level 2 qualifications, and/or have been working in the industry and are looking to accredit their skills and knowledge. The qualification provides progression opportunities for those with the intention of progressing into a supervisory role or onto a level 3 qualification.

Content – The qualification includes the following mandatory units:

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health & safety
  • Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition the hair and scalp
  • Change hair colour
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques

Optional units include:

  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Plait and twist hair
  • Perm and neutralise hair

Benefits – The successful Apprentice will have an increased knowledge or understanding of:

  • Health & safety procedures

  • Styling and finishing hair
  • Cutting hair using basic techniques

Duration – 12-18 months

Progression – Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering

Description – The Diploma in Barbering is suitable for people who have taken a level 1 or level 2 qualifications, and/or have been working in the industry and are looking to accredit their skills and knowledge. The qualification provides progression opportunities for those with the intention of progressing into a supervisory role or onto a level 3 qualification.

Content – The qualification includes the following mandatory units:

  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Assist with shaving services
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using basic barbering cutting techniques
  • Dry and finish men’s hair
  • Change men’s hair colour

Optional units include:

  • Fulfil salon reception duties
