Poultec’s Engineering Students Gear Up for Dirt Quake UK!

Poultec Training’s Engineering students have a busy few months ahead as they start their latest project to modify a bike to be included as a contender at the Dirt Quake UK competition, in the Street Tracker race.

The bike will be modified to fit the competition specification by Level 1 and Level 2 Engineering students, as well as students on the ‘Go-Moto’ programme at their dedicated Engineering Centre at The Henderson Business Park in Norwich.

The project will require students to strip the bike, replenish components, and make carbon fibre, flat track, handle bar clamps and foot rests, tooling for composite components as well as modifying and fabricating the exhaust system; all of which will help as evidence to go towards their Level 1 or Level 2 qualification in Performing Engineering Operations.

The bike and its log book were initially given to Mark Woods, Engineering Tutor and Assessor at Poultec Training by PCSO Gavin Tampin from Norfolk Constabulary, to be used within education and put to good use.

Dirt Quake UK will take place on 7th-9th July 2017 at The Adrian Flux Arena in Kings Lynn. The concept behind the competition is simple: race anything that could pass an MoT, in the same kit you’d ride on the street in. Riders get one practice, two heat races and, if the results are good enough, a final.

Mark commented on the project, “It is a great opportunity for Poultec Engineering students to demonstrate their enthusiasm and the skills gained on their training programme. The project will require students to strip and rebuild, design and manufacture of composite, as well as carrying out precision engineering. We are all looking forward to seeing the finished vehicle in action on the race track.”
