WHAT IS AN NVQ?
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification.
The main purpose of this award is to provide people with a nationally recognised qualification relevant to their current employment which they can train for and gain in the workplace.
A qualification like this is valued because it shows a person can do the job to the standard the industry requires and it also gives the customer more confidence in the product or service they are buying.

Who can train for an NVQ?
Anyone who is in a job/work placement which enables them to be assessed on-site for competence in the various duties and tasks defined in their personal training programme.

In what form does the training take place?

Training and assessing will take place on-site with additional seminars on specialist
topics.

How is my training programme decided?

Your training programme will be developed to meet the needs of your particular work area and will be made up of units that relate to your work. To enable us to provide a programme which is relevant to your position, you must select units from the optional units available. These must then be completed along with the
mandatory units to gain your award. Your training programme will be agreed with your allocated assessor upon commencement of the scheme.

How does the assessment take place?
You will be assessed in the workplace to prove your competence in routine work activities, work records and charts etc. and assessment of your Portfolio of
Evidence. Your assessor, who will be either employed by your own company or by Poultec, will be qualified and industry competent.
How do NVQ’s relate to other qualifications?

There are five levels of NVQ:
Level 1 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D-G
Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A-C
Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A levels/1 vocational A level
Level 4/5 is equivalent to HNC, HND and degree level

SO, WHAT ARE KEY SKILLS?

Key Skills are a life long qualification and form part of the Apprenticeship framework to include an NVQ qualification in your chosen profession.

Key skills are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general. In this section you will find the key skills standards, test specifications and example tests.

There are six key skills. The main three are:
• Communication
• Application of number
• Information technology

Together these make up the Key Skills Qualification.

The three wider key skills are:
• Working with others
• Improving own learning and performance
• Problem solving

WHY DO KEY SKILLS?

Key skills can significantly improve candidates:
• Motivation
• Progression
• Achievement
• Employability

Employers recognise the value of key skills in recruitment and for promotion. Higher education has recognised their worth, including key skills in the UCAS tariff system.

Key skills are increasingly essential in the workplace because employers want people who are:
• Computer literate
• Able to relate well with customers
• Good team workers
• Flexible in their job functions
• Able to organise their work activities
• Decision makers and problem solvers
• Able to communicate effectively
